Today was awesome! The feeding tube is out folks. Maverick is eating everything we give him, and he's pooping like a champ. The culture came back negative which means if it shows up tomorrow with nothing on it Maverick is in the clear. The one thing we would like for you to continue to pray for is his central line. They said it seemed a little "red and irritated.". It would really suck if the thing they put in to prevent infection was the one thing that actually gave him one. So keep praying infection would stay away. Terri and I are so excited to get this little dude home. We will keep you all posted on the culture. Thank you for your prayers.
p.s. I don't usually get sappy about songs but if you get a chance, try to listen to "Hear Our Prayers" by "The Glorious Unseen". This song pretty much wraps up our first week with Maverick. It might be that fatherhood is making me soft but, this song rocked me.

Today was a great day for Maverick. He finished every bottle we fed him. As long as he does the same tomorrow they will take his feeding tube out! His central line is doing well so continue to pray that infection would stay far away from his body. The cultures still show no signs of infection or bacteria. 2 more days before they can declare him healthy. When that happens Maverick comes home! And when Maverick comes home hide your daughters... this kid is gonna break hearts. Thanks for the prayers. Keep them coming.

Well, it has been a tough day for Maverick. He's been poked and prodded enough to last a lifetime. But, we can happily say the central line was put in with great success. The x-ray shows it to be in the perfect spot for him to get back on his meds. Continue praying that infection stays far away. Pray for a quick recovery.
Okay so... the pic line was a no go and after much consideration we have decided to let them put a central line in Mavericks chest. This will actually require surgery. There are some risks of infection involved so please pray that God would guide the surgeons hands and Maverick would recover perfectly. The good news is once this is in place Maverick will be able to get all the medicine he needs. It should literally be downhill from here. Also as you can see he started tanning today.
Maverick James Simmons was born at 7:42 p.m. on 5/20/09. The good Catholics at Mercy Hospital (OKC) brought him into this world. When Maverick was born he had some trouble breathing. He was immediately sent to the NICU where he could be better cared for. Although this sucks for mom and dad, we want him to get well. After one evening on breathing tubes "Mav" had already conquered the art of breathing. They took out the tubes and his breathing hasn't faltered since. He is a beast! After the tubes came out we needed to make sure there was no infection so they took a blood culture and told us it would take 5 days for results. On his 2nd day of existence Maverick had developed some sores around his thigh and bottom. They would have to take a culture thus adding 5 more days to his stay. They started giving him antibiotics and he seems to be improving. He also began feeding through a tube on his 2nd day. He attempted the bottle and the breast but wasn't quite ready. We were told this is very normal for preemies. On his 3rd day He drank 3 whole bottles on his own. It was a huge improvement! As of today they are having to put a pick line in. He keeps ripping the I.V.'s out! Also thus far no infection or bacteria have shown up on the cultures. Unfortunately Terri and I have to leave the hospital today. It is going to be very hard for Terri. Please pray for her that God would give her peace knowing that our baby is in good hands. Thank you for your prayers so far. please keep them coming. It is such a blessing to know that the body of Christ all over the U.S. is praying for our son. Maverick seems to be improving everyday. The Lord has filled him with strength which fills us with hope. Pray for a quick healing, and no more sores. Pray that he will come home soon. We will try to keep this updated daily.
